WORLD SCHIZOPHRENIA DAY: MAY 24th
Schizophrenia is a severe and disabling mental illness which affect close to 1% of the population. It affects both men and women and usually starts at young ages of 15-35. It causes major psychoses with loss of touch with reality.
The person with schizophrenia develops an imaginary world of his own wherein he believes he is being troubled by people, be it police, secret agencies, devils and so on. This is usually accompanied with hallucinations where one hears imaginary voices of people even when he is alone, which is quite distressing to the person. This condition often affects the individual’s social, occupational and day to day functioning making him dependent on others.
Though a severe illness, it can be treated to a great extent allowing the individual to have a functional life. The most important part though is to continue the treatment. Like most other chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure this condition too often needs long term treatment. In addition to medicines vocational and social rehabilitation helps the person cope with his life.
